Mussaka

” Moussaka  is an eggplant – (aubergine) or potato-based dish, often including ground meat, in the cuisines of the countries of the former Ottoman Empire, with many local and regional variations.” Wikipedia

The most common dish is the one made with potato cut into pig round slices. It is fatty and delicious! ❤ The meat is a mix of pork and beef, only pork, depends on each person preferences. The potato are fried or boiled.

Sometimes we have to go on a diet, healthy eating, even if isn’t our first choice! We can use mashed potatoes and chicken or turkey meat. ( The mashed potatoes are more tasty due to the extra ingredients, comparing with the boiled ones.)

I will write the recipe with the boiled potato, not very fatty.

The quantities are adaptable to the size of the tray you are using and after each person taste.

The ingredients:

  • ground meat around 600 gr
  • 2 spoons oil
  • 2 onions
  • 100 gr stock
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 spoons tomato paste
  • thyme
  • salt
  • pepper
  • cheese
  • 1 kg potato

How to make it:

Wash the potato and put them to boil. Let them cool, peel them and cut them into round slices.

Heat the oil and put and the chopped onion. Fry until gold and soft. Add the meat and fry until the juice evaporates. Let it cool and add the tomato paste, salt, pepper and thyme. ( It is also good with oregano or dill.)

Coat the tray with oil,put one layer of potato and half of the meat mixture. One more layer of potato and the second half of the meat mixture. On top we end with a potato layer.

Mix the eggs good with the cheese. Put them on top. Spread all over. Now you add the stock. ( Can be vegetables, beef, chicken, what you like.)

Let it bake for 45-50 minutes in the preheated oven at 180 degree.

It is easy and tasty! ❤ Comfort food!

Don’t forget: The quantities are adaptable, after you taste, if you like more meat – add, if you like more cheese – add, more spices- add, more fatty -add butter, more healthy – add olive oil!

If you want to make it more easy and fast, skip the middle layer of potato. Put the bottom and top layers with the meat in the middle. It is also delicious!!!! ❤

Bon appetit!
